TRP ratings and a sham survey
Faced with falling ratings and tough competition, the Malayalam news channel owned by BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar conjures up a "mood of the state" survey out of thin air, amid a pandemic, speculating on what people think of the current Government and the opposition. Predictably, the ratings, on the surface, seems to be favouring the left Government, since the intention of this poll clearly is to win back left supporters who have stopped watching the channel, due to their organised propaganda work and slanted night debates. The survey is a reluctant admission of the Government's good work during the pandemic, forced mainly by their ratings, to project them as much more balanced than they are. Their actual stand and intention is reflected in their news coverage.
But, more than that, the survey (as seen from screenshots shared in whatsapp and not by watching the channel), looks like a sly promotional work for Oommen Chandy, by the way it has trashed Chennithala and Mullappally and given high ratings for Chandy as the Congress's CM candidate. After Manorama's editorial which attacked Mullappally, this is yet another of wily old chandy's media jibes aimed at his own party mates. The ground is clearly being prepared for him to make a comeback to the helm of the Congress here.
The question that should be asked to those at the helm of the channel is this - Is this period of pandemic, when the state is still not free from COVID-19, the apt time for such a survey? The timing of this survey and the intentions behind it exposes the lack of commitment to the public, that this channel has lately been displaying in no small measure.
(Not mentioning the channel name or sharing the survey videos or screenshots since that would just aid the intentions of this sham survey)
